Welcome To St. Paul's Boarding & Day School

A Tradition of Education Guided By The Daughters of The Cross

our history our history

The legacy of St. Paul's Boarding and Day School is deeply rooted in a long tradition of service, compassion and education that spans more than a century. The journey began as early as 1873, when the Congregation of the Daughters of the Cross established St. Paul's Orphanage and School in Calcutta for Eurasian and Anglo-Indian orphan boys. The institution was founded with the noble intention of providing care, education and moral grounding to children who were vulnerable and in need of guidance, reflecting the Congregation's deep commitment to social upliftment through education.

The school was formally inaugurated in 1912 by Lady Carmichael, the wife of the then Governor of Bengal. This marked a significant milestone in the institution's history and laid the foundation for what would grow into a respected educational establishment in Kolkata.

Over the decades, St. Paul's evolved in response to the changing educational landscape. In 1974, the school was upgraded and formally recognized as an ICSE School for Boys, reflecting its growing academic stature. In the year 2000, the institution achieved another milestone when it was recognized as a Senior Secondary School affiliated to the Indian School Certificate (ISC) Examination, New Delhi, enabling students to pursue higher secondary education within the same nurturing environment.

A defining chapter in the school's history began in 1991, when the institution opened its doors to girl students, affirming its commitment to inclusive education. By 1999, the final batch of boys passed out, and thereafter St. Paul's transitioned into an exclusive girls' school, dedicated to the education and empowerment of young women. Today, St. Paul's Boarding and Day School stands proudly as a girls' boarding and day school in Kolkata, offering education from LKG to Class XII.

St. Paul's is a Minority Educational Institution, established and administered by the Congregation of the Daughters of the Cross of the Roman Catholic Church. The Congregation itself was founded in 1833 in Liège, Belgium, by Blessed Marie Thérèse Haze, a visionary educator and woman of deep faith. Since its inception, the Congregation has been actively engaged in the field of education across the world, guided by a mission of service, compassion and holistic development.

As Daughters of the Cross, the members of the Congregation draw inspiration from the Cross of Christ, a symbol of peace, love and self-giving. For Blessed Marie Thérèse Haze, the Cross was the centre of her life, from which she derived strength, courage and hope. Inspired by her spirit, the educators at St. Paul's strive to be educators of joy and hope, committed to the liberation and upliftment of every individual, especially the weak, the poor, the marginalized and the rejected of society.

In the spirit of its Foundress, St. Paul's remains deeply committed to the education of young girls, particularly those from the Catholic community, while being attentive and responsive to the educational needs of a diverse and ever-changing society. Rooted in strong values and guided by modern educational practices aligned with the ICSE curriculum and NEP 2020, the school continues its mission of shaping confident, compassionate and responsible young women for the future.
